When word of mouth stalls, build the second engine
Referrals built your business. They will not double it. Here is how to add a second acquisition channel without losing the trust that referrals carry.
Referrals are the best leads you will ever get: pre sold, pre trusted, and free. They are also capped. Your customers only know so many people, they only think of you at certain moments, and you cannot schedule any of it. That is why referral businesses grow in spurts and plateau without warning.
The plateau is not a quality problem. It is a visibility problem: everyone who was going to hear about you from a friend already has. The next customer is searching Google, scrolling Instagram, or asking an AI assistant, and you are not in any of those rooms yet.
The second engine is search plus proof, and the order matters.
First, be findable: a complete Google Business Profile and a website that says what you do, where, for whom. If people only find you when they search your exact name, start with why your business only shows up for its own name.
Second, look chosen: a steady stream of Google reviews doing the vouching your referrers used to do. The system for that is in how to get more Google reviews.
Third, answer the questions buyers actually ask, on your site and your socials, so strangers can build the trust your referrals arrived with. The full map is how customers find and choose you online.

They are enough to sustain one, rarely enough to grow one on a schedule. Referrals are capped by how many people your customers know and when they happen to speak up. Growth needs a channel you can turn up on purpose.
Local search plus reviews, because it catches people already looking for what you sell. Social and ads work later, but search intent converts first and costs least.
Do not panic spend on ads. Check whether strangers can find and trust you online, fix that first, then re engage past customers with a simple follow up. Slowdowns usually reveal a visibility gap, not a demand gap.
